Days after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Kyiv, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders engaged in discussions regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict during the Cernobbio Business Forum. PM Meloni expressed her belief that India could play a significant role in resolving the situation between Russia and Ukraine. Her comments echoed those of President Zelenskyy, who previously stated that “India can stop Putin.” India has positioned itself as a crucial player in the conflict, thanks to its strong diplomatic relationships with the nations affected by the war.
Prime Minister Meloni remarked, “I believe that influential nations like China and India have a responsibility to contribute to resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The one thing we cannot do, gentlemen, is to assume that the conflict can be resolved by leaving Ukraine to fend for itself, as that would not lead to peace; rather, it would result in chaos, bring wars closer to our borders, and lead to severe economic repercussions that would far exceed the costs we currently incur in supporting Ukraine. Our decision to support Ukraine is fundamentally a matter of national interest, and it is a stance that will not change.”
