PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In response to the United States' recent imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has delivered a resolute message emphasizing India's commitment to protecting its farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers. Addressing a global conference marking the birth centenary of renowned agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, Modi stated, "For us, the interests of our farmers are our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers, and fishermen."

The U.S. administration's decision to impose steep tariffs, citing India's continued imports of Russian oil, has strained bilateral relations. President Donald Trump has indicated that no further trade negotiations will proceed until the tariff dispute is resolved. In response, Modi has reaffirmed India's stance, expressing readiness to bear any personal cost to safeguard the nation's agricultural and fishing communities.

Modi's firm position underscores a broader strategy to bolster domestic industries amid global trade tensions. He has called for increased support for indigenous products, urging citizens to prioritize locally made goods. This approach aligns with the "Make in India" initiative, aiming to enhance self-reliance and reduce dependency on foreign imports.

The escalating trade standoff has also prompted India to strengthen ties with other global partners. Modi has engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the importance of their strategic partnership. The dialogue included talks on the Ukraine conflict and reaffirmed commitments to deepen bilateral relations.

As the situation develops, India's government is exploring alternative markets for its exports and considering measures to mitigate the economic impact of the U.S. tariffs. The focus remains on ensuring the welfare of its citizens and maintaining economic stability amidst the ongoing trade disputes.
