PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs: India Will Not Compromise On Farmers’ Interests

In a resolute address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has intensified the ongoing trade standoff between the two nations.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it." This statement underscores India's determination to prioritize domestic agricultural interests over external pressures.

The U.S. tariffs, which took effect in August 2025, were introduced as a punitive measure in response to India's continued imports of Russian oil. These tariffs have significantly impacted key Indian export sectors, including textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry. Despite the economic challenges posed by these tariffs, Modi's government remains steadfast in its support for the agricultural community.

In addition to defending farmers, Modi has called for increased self-reliance in manufacturing, particularly in sectors such as fertilizers, jet engines, and electric vehicle batteries. This push for self-reliance aims to reduce India's dependence on foreign imports and strengthen domestic industries amid global trade uncertainties.

The Indian government's response to the U.S. tariffs has been multifaceted. The Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, labeling them "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations, aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens. Furthermore, Modi has urged citizens to support domestic products, emphasizing the importance of national resilience and economic self-reliance.

As the trade tensions continue, India's commitment to protecting its farmers and promoting self-reliance remains a central theme in its economic strategy. The government's firm stance reflects a broader vision to navigate global trade challenges while prioritizing the welfare of its citizens and the sustainability of its domestic industries.
