PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs: India Will Not Compromise On Farmers’ Interests

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. His remarks came in response to President Donald Trump's recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, citing concerns over India's continued imports of Russian oil.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."

The U.S. tariffs, which have effectively doubled duties on a range of Indian exports, have raised concerns about potential disruptions in key sectors such as textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry. In response, India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated extensive consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and relevant stakeholders to assess the impact of the new U.S. trade actions and to formulate an effective response strategy.

Modi's commitment to protecting India's agricultural sector aligns with his broader vision of self-reliance. He has called for a renewed focus on domestic manufacturing, particularly in areas such as fertilizers, jet engines, and electric vehicle batteries, to reduce dependency on foreign imports.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, both nations have expressed a desire to resolve their differences. During a meeting in New Delhi, President Trump acknowledged Modi as a "great friend" and expressed confidence in reaching a favorable outcome for both countries. He stated, "I think it's going to work out very well between India and our country."

As the situation develops, India remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the livelihoods of its farmers and the integrity of its agricultural sector, while seeking constructive dialogue to address the trade disputes with the United States.
