PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs: India Prioritizes Farmers Amid Trade Tensions

In a resolute address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, even in the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has intensified the ongoing trade standoff between the two nations.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it." This statement underscores India's determination to protect its agricultural sector despite external pressures.

The U.S. tariffs, which have been implemented in response to India's continued importation of Russian oil, have raised concerns about their potential impact on key Indian export sectors, including textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry. The Indian government has expressed its dissatisfaction with these measures, labeling them as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable."

In response to the escalating trade tensions, Prime Minister Modi has called for a renewed focus on self-reliance, urging citizens to support domestic industries by purchasing Indian-made products. This initiative aims to bolster the domestic economy and reduce dependence on foreign imports, aligning with the government's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" campaign.

Despite the challenges posed by the U.S. tariffs, India remains committed to engaging in constructive dialogue with the United States to resolve trade disputes. The Indian government continues to advocate for fair and equitable trade practices, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and understanding in international relations.

As the situation develops, both nations are expected to engage in further negotiations to address the trade imbalances and seek a resolution that upholds the interests of all parties involved. The outcome of these discussions will be pivotal in shaping the future of India-U.S. trade relations.
