In a resolute address on India's Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the nation's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock holders, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to President Donald Trump's recent imposition of additional tariffs on Indian goods, a move that has intensified bilateral trade disputes.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, Modi declared, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He further stated, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. Today, India is ready for the country's farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers."
The Prime Minister's comments underscore India's determination to protect its agricultural sector amid external pressures. The United States has recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing concerns over India's continued import of Russian oil. This action has raised fears of a potential trade fallout, particularly affecting key Indian export sectors such as textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry.
In response to these developments, India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, describing them as "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens. It also pointed out that many other countries are making similar decisions to meet their national energy needs, yet only India appears to be facing such punitive action.
Despite the escalating trade tensions, Modi remains optimistic about India's economic trajectory. The International Monetary Fund recently revised India's economic growth forecast for the 2025/26 fiscal year upward to 6.6%, citing strong momentum from robust private consumption in the first quarter, which offset the negative impact of heightened U.S. tariffs on Indian imports.
As the trade standoff continues, Prime Minister Modi's firm stance reflects India's commitment to its domestic priorities and its readiness to face external challenges head-on. The government's focus remains on ensuring the welfare of its citizens, particularly those in the agricultural sector, while navigating the complexities of international trade relations.
