In a resolute address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has intensified bilateral trade disputes.
Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."
The U.S. tariffs, which took effect on August 27, 2025, were introduced as a punitive measure against India's continued imports of Russian oil. This decision has raised concerns about the potential impact on key Indian export sectors, including textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry.
In response to the tariffs, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs criticized the U.S. actions, describing them as "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.
Despite the escalating trade tensions, both Modi and Trump have expressed a desire to strengthen bilateral relations. In a recent phone conversation, Modi and Trump acknowledged "good progress" in ongoing trade negotiations and agreed to continue close coordination.
As the situation develops, India remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the welfare of its agricultural community, signaling a determination to navigate the challenges posed by the U.S. tariffs while upholding national interests.
