PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, even in the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that intensified existing trade disputes between the two nations.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it." This statement underscores India's determination to protect its agricultural sector despite external pressures.

The U.S. tariffs, which have now reached a cumulative 50%, were introduced as a punitive measure in response to India's continued importation of Russian oil. This escalation has significantly impacted key Indian export sectors, including textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry. The Indian government has expressed its dissatisfaction with these tariffs, labeling them as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable."

In response to the trade challenges, Prime Minister Modi has called for a renewed focus on self-reliance, urging citizens to support domestic industries by purchasing Indian-made products. He emphasized the importance of economic self-sufficiency, stating, "Being dependent on other countries is a recipe for disaster. We must be self-reliant to safeguard our interests."

Despite the escalating trade tensions, both India and the United States have expressed a desire to resolve their differences through dialogue. Modi's firm stance highlights India's commitment to protecting its national interests, even at the cost of strained relations with a key trading partner. The situation remains dynamic, with ongoing discussions aimed at finding a mutually beneficial resolution.
