PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, even in the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States. His remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that intensified the ongoing trade standoff between the two nations.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know, we will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

The U.S. tariffs were introduced as a punitive measure in response to India's continued import of Russian oil, a decision that has strained bilateral relations. Despite these pressures, Modi's government has remained steadfast in its support for domestic agricultural sectors, emphasizing the need for self-reliance and resilience in the face of external challenges.

In his speech, Modi also highlighted the importance of promoting indigenous products, urging citizens to support domestic industries as a means of bolstering the nation's economy and reducing dependency on foreign goods. This call aligns with the government's broader "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, which aims to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and economic independence.

The escalating trade tensions have prompted India to seek alternative markets and strengthen existing partnerships. Modi's recent visit to Japan underscored the importance of stable relations with neighboring countries, with discussions focusing on enhancing economic and security cooperation amid the ongoing trade disputes with the U.S.

As the situation develops, India's commitment to protecting its agricultural sector and promoting self-reliance remains a central theme in its response to the U.S. tariffs. The government's focus on domestic welfare and economic resilience continues to guide its policies and international engagements.
