PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that intensified the ongoing trade standoff between the two nations.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it." This statement underscored his readiness to bear personal and political costs to protect India's agricultural sector.

The U.S. tariffs were imposed as a punitive measure for India's continued purchase of Russian oil, a decision that has strained bilateral relations. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, calling them "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations, aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Modi's address also highlighted the need for India to become more self-reliant, particularly in manufacturing sectors such as fertilizers, jet engines, and electric vehicle batteries. He emphasized that building on the legacy of food security, the next frontier for India's agricultural scientists is ensuring nutritional security for all.

The escalating trade tensions have led to significant disruptions in trade relations, with Indian exporters reporting order cancellations and suspensions from U.S. buyers. The electronics sector, in particular, faces potential losses of $20–30 billion due to the tariffs. In response, the Indian government is implementing a three-pronged strategy: supporting affected exporters, diverting trade to alternate markets, and redirecting impacted exports to domestic consumption.

Despite the challenges posed by the U.S. tariffs, Prime Minister Modi's firm stance reflects India's determination to protect its economic interests and uphold the welfare of its citizens, particularly those in the agricultural sector.
