PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has intensified bilateral trade disputes.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He acknowledged the potential personal and diplomatic costs of this stance, asserting, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."

The U.S. tariffs were imposed as a punitive measure in response to India's continued import of Russian oil, despite international sanctions. This decision has raised concerns about the potential impact on key Indian export sectors, including textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry.

In response to these developments, India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, calling them "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations, aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, both nations have expressed a desire to resolve their differences. President Trump has indicated a willingness to negotiate a trade deal once the tariff dispute is addressed, while Prime Minister Modi has reiterated India's commitment to protecting its agricultural and dairy sectors, emphasizing that the welfare of its farmers and fishermen remains the government's "top priority."

As the situation develops, the international community continues to monitor the evolving trade relations between India and the United States, with hopes for a resolution that balances economic interests and diplomatic relations.
