PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on India's Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the nation's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock keepers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to President Donald Trump's recent imposition of additional tariffs on Indian goods, a move that has intensified bilateral trade disputes.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, Modi declared, "If any policy is against India's farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers, Modi is standing like a wall." He further stated, "Today, when economic selfishness is rising day by day in the global situation, it is the need of the hour that we don't sit crying over those crises. Himmat ke saath apni lakeer ko lambi karein…If we take that path, no selfishness will not able to entangle us."

The Prime Minister's comments underscore India's determination to prioritize domestic agricultural interests over external pressures. This stance is particularly significant given the U.S. administration's recent actions, including the imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, described by the U.S. as a "penalty" for India's continued purchase of Russian oil.

In response to these developments, India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated extensive consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and relevant stakeholders. The objective is to assess the potential impact of the new U.S. trade actions and to formulate an effective response strategy. These discussions aim to safeguard the interests of a broad spectrum of the Indian economy, including farmers, laborers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, and micro, small, and medium enterprises .

The escalating trade tensions have also prompted India to explore alternative economic partnerships. Notably, during a recent visit to China, Prime Minister Modi engaged in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The three leaders were seen holding hands, symbolizing unity against U.S. policies that have included tariffs and perceived insults. Modi used the occasion to launch a "Global Governance Initiative," advocating for international cooperation and integration rather than division.

As the situation develops, India's steadfast commitment to protecting its agricultural sector remains clear. The government's proactive measures and diplomatic engagements reflect a strategic approach to navigating the complexities of international trade relations while prioritizing national interests.
