PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods, a move that has intensified bilateral trade disputes.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know, we will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, had recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing concerns over India's continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict. This action was perceived as a punitive measure against India's energy procurement choices.

In response to these developments, India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning the U.S. tariffs as "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Despite the mounting trade tensions, Prime Minister Modi reiterated his commitment to India's self-reliance, urging citizens to support domestic industries. He emphasized the importance of promoting indigenous products, stating, "I earnestly request my brothers and sisters in the business community… we too should sell only indigenous goods. Every moment, we will now buy only indigenous goods. This will be a great tribute to Mahatma Gandhi."

The escalating trade disputes have prompted India to seek alternative partnerships and strengthen ties with other nations. Modi's recent visits to Japan and China underscore this strategic shift, aiming to diversify India's international alliances and reduce dependency on the U.S. market.

As the trade standoff continues, India's steadfast position highlights the nation's determination to protect its economic interests and uphold the welfare of its citizens, even in the face of external pressures.
