PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on India's 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message in response to the United States' recent imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods. Standing before the Red Fort in New Delhi, Modi emphasized his unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of India's farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers, stating, "If any policy is against India's farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers, Modi is standing like a wall."

The U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, had escalated trade tensions by imposing a 25% "reciprocal" tariff on Indian imports, followed by an additional 25% penalty linked to India's continued purchase of Russian oil. These measures brought the total duty on Indian goods to a staggering 50%, among the highest imposed on any trading partner.

In response to these tariffs, India has initiated consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and relevant stakeholders to assess the potential impact and formulate an effective response strategy. The objective is to safeguard the interests of a broad spectrum of the Indian economy, including farmers, laborers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, and micro, small, and medium enterprises .

Despite the escalating trade tensions, President Trump has expressed optimism about the future of U.S.-India relations. In a recent statement, he praised Prime Minister Modi as a "very smart man" and a "great friend," expressing confidence that ongoing trade discussions would lead to a mutually beneficial outcome.

The situation remains dynamic, with both nations engaged in ongoing dialogues to address the trade disputes. The outcome of these discussions will significantly influence the economic and strategic landscape of the region in the coming months.
