PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock holders, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods, a move that has intensified the ongoing trade standoff between the two nations.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know, we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it." This statement underscores India's determination to prioritize domestic agricultural interests over external pressures.

The U.S. has recently escalated trade tensions by imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, raising the total duty to 50%. This action is part of a broader strategy by the U.S. to address what it perceives as unfair trade practices and to pressure India into reducing its dependency on Russian oil. The tariffs have been particularly impactful on key Indian export sectors, including textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry.

In response to these developments, India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, labeling them "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, Modi remains committed to enhancing India's self-reliance in manufacturing, particularly in sectors such as fertilizers, jet engines, and electric vehicle batteries. This initiative aligns with his broader vision of promoting the "Swadeshi" movement, encouraging the consumption of domestically produced goods to bolster the national economy.

The ongoing trade disputes have also led to a freeze in negotiations over a bilateral trade agreement between India and the U.S. A key sticking point has been Washington's push for broader access to India's agricultural markets—a demand that New Delhi continues to resist to protect domestic farming communities. As the situation develops, both nations are expected to engage in further discussions to address these complex trade issues.
