Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, Modi declared, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He acknowledged the potential personal and diplomatic costs of this stance but reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding India's agricultural backbone. "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it," Modi stated, underscoring his dedication to the welfare of India's rural communities.
The U.S. tariffs were introduced as a punitive measure in response to India's continued purchase of Russian oil, a decision that has further complicated trade relations between the two nations. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, calling them "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable."
