PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to President Donald Trump's recent imposition of additional tariffs on Indian goods, a move that has intensified bilateral trade disputes.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know, we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

The U.S. administration had recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing concerns over India's continued purchase of Russian oil amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This action was perceived as a punitive measure aimed at pressuring India to alter its foreign policy decisions.

In response to these developments, India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning the U.S. tariffs as "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations, aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, Modi reiterated his commitment to India's self-reliance, urging citizens to support domestic industries. He emphasized the importance of purchasing indigenous goods, stating, "We too should sell only indigenous goods. Every moment, we will now buy only indigenous goods. This will be a great tribute to Mahatma Gandhi."

The ongoing trade disputes have raised concerns about the potential impact on India's economy, particularly its key export sectors such as textiles, footwear, gems, and jewelry. Analysts warn that the escalating tensions could disrupt India's economic growth trajectory, urging both nations to seek a mutually beneficial resolution to avoid further economic repercussions.

In summary, Prime Minister Modi's strong message underscores India's determination to protect its agricultural and economic interests, even in the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States. His call for self-reliance and support for domestic industries reflects a strategic approach to navigate the challenges posed by international trade disputes.
