PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that intensified existing trade disputes.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He acknowledged the potential personal and diplomatic costs of this stance, asserting, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."

The U.S. tariffs were introduced as a punitive measure in response to India's continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict. This decision by President Donald Trump marked a significant escalation in trade tensions between the two nations, which had been building over previous disputes.

In his speech, Modi also highlighted the importance of self-reliance, stating, "Being dependent on other countries is a recipe for disaster. We must be self-reliant to safeguard our interests." This sentiment aligns with his government's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, aimed at reducing dependency on foreign imports and bolstering domestic industries.

The Prime Minister's firm position underscores India's determination to protect its agricultural sector and maintain its foreign policy autonomy, even in the face of external pressures. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the U.S. will respond to India's steadfast approach and whether diplomatic negotiations can alleviate the ongoing trade disputes.
