PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, raising the total duty to 50%, a move attributed to India's continued purchase of Russian oil.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know, we will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

The Prime Minister's comments underscore India's determination to protect its agricultural sector amidst external pressures. The U.S. tariffs have intensified trade tensions, with the U.S. administration expressing concerns over India's energy imports from Russia and seeking greater access to India's agricultural markets.

In response to the escalating trade disputes, India has initiated consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and stakeholders to assess the impact of the new U.S. trade actions and develop effective countermeasures. The objective is to safeguard the interests of a broad spectrum of the Indian economy, including farmers, laborers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, and small and medium enterprises.

Despite the challenges posed by the U.S. tariffs, India remains committed to its goal of becoming a self-reliant nation. The government continues to promote domestic manufacturing and is exploring alternative trade partnerships to mitigate the impact of the tariffs. Prime Minister Modi's strong stance reflects India's resolve to prioritize national interests and economic sovereignty in the face of external pressures.
