PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that intensified existing trade disputes.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He acknowledged the potential personal and diplomatic costs of this stance, asserting, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."

The U.S. tariffs were introduced as a punitive measure in response to India's continued import of Russian oil, a decision that has strained bilateral relations. Despite these tensions, Modi's government has remained steadfast in its support for domestic agricultural sectors, emphasizing the need for self-reliance and resilience in the face of external pressures.

In his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2025, Modi reiterated his commitment to protecting India's economic interests, particularly those of its farmers and small industries. He called for a collective effort to promote indigenous products, stating, "I earnestly request my brothers and sisters in the business community… we too should sell only indigenous goods."

The ongoing trade disputes have prompted India to seek alternative economic partnerships and strengthen ties with other nations, including China and Russia. Modi's recent visits to these countries underscore India's strategic approach to diversifying its international relationships amid the challenges posed by U.S. trade policies.

As the situation develops, India's resolve to protect its domestic industries and maintain economic sovereignty remains a central theme in its diplomatic and economic strategies. The government's focus on self-reliance and support for local industries continues to guide its response to external economic pressures.
