PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 7, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came in response to the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that intensified existing trade disputes.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He acknowledged the potential personal and diplomatic costs of this stance, expressing readiness to bear them for the nation's agricultural community.

The U.S. administration's decision to impose tariffs on Indian imports was partly in response to India's continued purchase of Russian oil, a move that has strained bilateral relations. Despite these tensions, Modi's government has remained steadfast in its support for domestic farmers and the agricultural sector.

In his speech, Modi also highlighted the importance of self-reliance, urging the nation to focus on indigenous products and reduce dependence on foreign goods. He called for a collective effort to promote local industries, viewing this as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's vision of self-sufficiency.

The Prime Minister's comments underscore India's determination to protect its economic interests and support its farmers, even in the face of external pressures. This stance reflects a broader strategy to bolster domestic industries and reduce reliance on imports, aligning with the government's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative.

As the trade standoff continues, both nations are engaged in ongoing discussions to resolve their differences. The outcome of these negotiations will significantly impact the future of India-U.S. trade relations and the global economic landscape.
