PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 15, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock keepers, despite escalating trade tensions with the United States. Speaking from the Red Fort on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Modi declared, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know, we will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

This statement came in response to the U.S. administration's decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that was later followed by an additional 25% tariff, effectively doubling the duties to 50%. The U.S. cited India's continued purchase of Russian oil amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict as the primary reason for these punitive measures.

Modi's remarks underscored his government's determination to shield domestic agricultural sectors from external pressures. He highlighted the importance of self-reliance, stating, "Being dependent on other countries is a recipe for disaster. We must be self-reliant to safeguard our interests."

In the face of these challenges, the Indian government has initiated consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and other stakeholders to assess the impact of the new U.S. tariffs and to develop effective response strategies. The objective is to safeguard the interests of a broad spectrum of the Indian economy, including farmers, laborers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, and micro, small, and medium enterprises .

Despite the escalating trade tensions, both India and the U.S. have expressed a desire to resolve their differences through dialogue. U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated plans to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks, aiming to address the trade barriers and seek a favorable deal for both nations.

As the situation develops, India's steadfast commitment to its agricultural community remains clear, with the government prioritizing the welfare of its farmers and related sectors over external pressures.
