PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In a resolute address on August 15, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock holders amid escalating trade tensions with the United States. Speaking from the Red Fort on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Modi declared, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He further stated, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

This strong stance comes in response to the U.S. administration's recent imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a move that has intensified trade tensions between the two nations. The U.S. cited India's continued purchase of Russian oil as a primary reason for the punitive measures. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized the new trade penalties, calling them "unjustified, unfair, and unreasonable." The ministry highlighted that India's energy imports, including those from Russia, are based on economic and strategic considerations, aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its 1.4 billion citizens.

Modi's remarks underscore a broader strategy to bolster India's self-reliance in critical sectors. He announced that domestically produced semiconductor chips would be available by year's end and that reforms to the Goods and Services Tax would be completed by October, aimed at benefiting the middle class. Additionally, he pledged to protect Indian agricultural markets from foreign competition, emphasizing the need to reduce dependence on imports.

The escalating trade tensions have also prompted diplomatic engagements. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about resolving the trade disputes, stating that he would speak with Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks to finalize a favorable trade deal for both nations. Modi echoed this sentiment, highlighting the strong U.S.-India partnership and the shared goal of concluding trade talks soon.

As the situation develops, both nations continue to navigate the complexities of international trade relations, balancing national interests with the pursuit of mutually beneficial agreements.
