PM Modi’s Strong Message Over Trump Tariffs

In response to the United States' recent imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has delivered a resolute message emphasizing India's commitment to protecting its farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers. Addressing a global conference marking the birth centenary of renowned agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, Modi stated, "For us, the interests of our farmers are our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers."

The U.S. tariffs, which took effect on August 6, 2025, were introduced as a punitive measure against India's continued import of Russian crude oil. This move has intensified trade tensions between the two nations, with India expressing strong disapproval. The Ministry of External Affairs labeled the tariffs as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," highlighting that India's energy imports are based on market factors and aimed at ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion citizens.

In his address, Modi emphasized the need for self-reliance, urging citizens to support domestic industries by choosing "Made in India" products. He remarked, "I earnestly request my brothers and sisters in the business community… we too should sell only indigenous goods. Every moment, we will now buy only indigenous goods. This will be a great tribute to Mahatma Gandhi."

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the potential personal and national costs of this stance, expressing his readiness to face them. He stated, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. Today, India is ready for the country's farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers."

Modi's message underscores India's determination to safeguard its economic interests and support its agricultural sector amidst escalating trade disputes with the United States. The government's focus on self-reliance and domestic consumption aims to mitigate the impact of external pressures and promote sustainable growth.
