In response to the United States' recent imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has delivered a resolute message emphasizing India's commitment to protecting its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. Addressing a global conference marking the birth centenary of renowned agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, Modi stated, "For us, the interests of our farmers are our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers."
The U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, has escalated trade tensions by imposing a 25% tariff on Indian exports, with an additional 25% tariff set to take effect on August 27. These measures are reportedly in response to India's continued imports of Russian oil, a move that has drawn criticism from Washington.
In his address, Modi acknowledged the potential personal and national costs of resisting these tariffs but affirmed India's stance. He remarked, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. Today, India is ready for the country's farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers."
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of self-reliance in the face of global economic uncertainties. He urged citizens to prioritize indigenous products, stating, "I earnestly request my brothers and sisters in the business community… we too should sell only indigenous goods. Every moment, we will now buy only indigenous goods. This will be a great tribute to Mahatma Gandhi."
Modi's remarks underscore India's determination to safeguard its economic interests and support its agricultural sector amidst escalating trade tensions with the United States. The government's focus on self-reliance and protection of domestic industries reflects a strategic approach to navigating the challenges posed by international trade disputes.
