PM Modi’s Strong Message Amid US Tariff Tensions

In a resolute address on India's Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the nation's commitment to self-reliance and the protection of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, in response to escalating trade tensions with the United States. Modi's remarks came shortly after the U.S. imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods, intensifying the ongoing trade standoff.

Addressing the nation from Delhi's Red Fort, Modi reaffirmed his dedication to a "self-reliant India" , underscoring the need to reduce dependence on imports, particularly in critical sectors such as microchips and defense engines. He announced that domestically produced semiconductor chips would be available by the end of the year, signaling a significant step toward technological self-sufficiency.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government's commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, stating, "For us, the interests of our farmers are our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He further emphasized his readiness to personally bear any costs associated with these protective measures, expressing a willingness to "pay a heavy price" to ensure their welfare.

In response to the U.S. tariffs, which have raised duties on some Indian exports to 50%, the Indian government has initiated extensive consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and stakeholders to assess the potential impact and formulate effective response strategies. These discussions aim to protect the interests of various sectors, including agriculture, textiles, and small industries, which are particularly vulnerable to the heightened trade barriers.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, Modi's address conveyed a message of resilience and determination, urging the nation to embrace indigenous products and bolster domestic industries. He called upon citizens to support "Swadeshi" goods, viewing this as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and a step toward economic self-sufficiency.

The Prime Minister's strong stance underscores India's resolve to navigate the challenges posed by the U.S. tariffs while prioritizing the welfare of its citizens and the nation's economic interests. As the situation develops, India's focus remains on fostering self-reliance and protecting its key sectors from external pressures.
