He stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."
The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, has escalated trade tensions by imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, bringing the total to 50%. This move is a direct response to India's continued importation of discounted Russian oil, a practice that the U.S. views as undermining its sanctions against Russia. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized India for "arbitrage," accusing the nation of purchasing discounted Russian crude and reselling it as refined products.
In light of these developments, Prime Minister Modi has called for a renewed focus on self-reliance, particularly in critical sectors such as semiconductors and defense equipment. During India's 78th Independence Day celebrations, he announced that domestically produced semiconductor chips would be available by year's end and that reforms to the Goods and Services Tax would be completed by October, aimed at benefiting the middle class. He also pledged to protect Indian agricultural markets from foreign competition.
The Indian government has also initiated extensive consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and relevant stakeholders to assess the potential impact of the new U.S. trade actions and to formulate an effective response strategy.
