India’s Response To U.S. Tariffs: A Commitment To Self-Reliance And Protection Of Farmers

In his recent Independence Day address from Delhi's Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message in response to the United States' imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods. While refraining from directly naming the U.S., Modi emphasized India's commitment to self-reliance and the protection of its farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers. He stated, "If any policy is against India's farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers, Modi is standing like a wall."

The U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, recently imposed a 25% "reciprocal" tariff on Indian goods, followed by an additional 25% penalty due to India's continued imports of Russian oil. These measures have strained bilateral relations and raised concerns about their impact on India's economy.

In response to these developments, Prime Minister Modi announced plans to reduce the Goods and Services Tax starting in October, aiming to boost domestic consumption, particularly ahead of the Diwali shopping season. Additionally, he introduced the 'Sudarshan Chakra' defense system to strengthen national security following recent military conflicts.

Modi also called for increased domestic production in critical sectors such as fertilizers, electric vehicle batteries, and semiconductors. He emphasized the need to reduce dependence on imports and promote the "Swadeshi" movement, encouraging the use of Indian-made goods.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, Indian officials have indicated that trade negotiations with the U.S. continue. The government remains hopeful that bilateral relations can proceed based on mutual respect and shared interests, aiming to resolve the current disputes and strengthen economic ties.
