In the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has delivered a resolute message emphasizing India's commitment to self-reliance and the protection of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers. This stance comes in response to the U.S. administration's recent imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods, citing concerns over India's continued imports of Russian oil.
Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi, Prime Minister Modi stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers." He further expressed his readiness to bear any personal cost to uphold these interests, saying, "I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it."
The U.S. has imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, with an additional 25% tariff announced recently, bringing the total to 50%. These measures are viewed as punitive actions in response to India's ongoing purchases of Russian crude oil. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has criticized these tariffs as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," emphasizing that India's energy imports are based on market factors and aimed at ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion citizens.
In response to the trade challenges, India has announced significant tax cuts on hundreds of consumer goods, including air conditioners and small cars, to boost domestic consumption and counteract the economic impact of the U.S. tariffs. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman detailed reforms that simplify the Goods and Services Tax structure from four tiers to two—5% and 18%. Most goods will benefit from these lower rates, though luxury items like high-end cars and tobacco will face a special rate of 40%. The new tax rules are set to take effect on September 22, coinciding with major Hindu festivals.
Prime Minister Modi has also emphasized the importance of self-reliance, urging citizens to embrace indigenous products. He stated, "Swadeshi should become our life mantra—walk proudly towards self-reliance." This call aligns with the government's broader "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, which aims to reduce dependence on imports and bolster domestic manufacturing.
In the international arena, Modi has strengthened ties with China and Russia, symbolizing a strategic pivot amid growing tensions with the U.S. During his visit to China, Modi, along with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, showcased unity against U.S. policies that have included tariffs and perceived insults. The three leaders were seen holding hands at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, portraying solidarity in the face of external pressures.
As the trade standoff continues, India's focus remains on safeguarding the interests of its citizens, particularly farmers and small industries, while pursuing avenues for economic self-sufficiency and international cooperation.
