India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi Has Delivered A Resolute Response To The United States’ Recent Imposition Of Tariffs On Indian Goods, Emphasizing The Nation’s Unwavering Commitment To Protecting Its Farmers, Fishermen, And Dairy Producers. Addressing The MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference In New Delhi, Modi Stated, "For Us, The Interest Of Our Farmers Is Our Top Priority. India Will Never Compromise On The Interests Of Farmers, Fishermen, And Dairy Farmers. I Know, We Will Have To Pay A Heavy Price For It, But I Am Ready For It. India Is Ready For It."

This statement comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian exports, with an additional 25% levy targeting India's continued purchase of Russian oil. The U.S. administration has described these measures as "penalties" aimed at India's energy procurement choices.

Modi's remarks underscore India's determination to prioritize domestic agricultural interests over external pressures. He highlighted the nation's focus on self-reliance, stating, "Being dependent on other countries is a recipe for disaster. We must be self-reliant to safeguard our interests."

In response to the escalating trade tensions, India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated extensive consultations with exporters, industry bodies, and relevant stakeholders. The objective is to assess the potential impact of the new U.S. trade actions and to formulate an effective response strategy that safeguards the interests of a broad spectrum of the Indian economy, including farmers, laborers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, and micro, small, and medium enterprises .

The trade dispute has also led to a freeze in negotiations over a bilateral trade agreement between India and the U.S. A key sticking point has been Washington's push for broader access to India's agricultural markets—a demand that New Delhi continues to resist in order to protect domestic farming communities.

As the situation develops, both nations are engaged in diplomatic efforts to address the trade tensions. The outcome of these discussions will significantly influence the future trajectory of India-U.S. relations and the broader global economic landscape.
