In the face of escalating trade tensions, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the interests of India's farmers, dairy producers, and fishermen. This strong stance comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, citing concerns over India's continued purchase of Russian oil.
Addressing a global conference marking the birth centenary of renowned agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, Modi emphasized that the welfare of farmers is India's top priority. He stated, "India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers, and fishermen." Acknowledging the potential personal and political costs, Modi expressed his readiness to bear them, underscoring his dedication to the nation's agricultural sector.
The U.S. administration's decision to double tariffs on Indian imports has been justified as a penalty for India's ongoing oil purchases from Russia, despite international sanctions. This move has led to a breakdown in trade negotiations between the two nations, with no further talks anticipated until the tariff dispute is resolved.
Domestically, the tariff escalation has raised concerns among Indian industries, particularly the electronics sector, which faces potential losses of $20–30 billion due to the new duties. The Indian government is actively working on strategies to support affected exporters, explore alternative markets, and redirect impacted exports to domestic consumption. Additionally, the State Bank of India has cautioned that halting Russian oil imports could increase India's fuel bill by up to $12 billion.
In response to the U.S. actions, India's Foreign Ministry condemned the tariff hike as "extremely unfortunate" and vowed to protect national interests. The ministry highlighted that similar actions have not been taken against other nations, such as China, the largest buyer of Russian oil, raising questions about the fairness and consistency of the U.S. approach.
As the situation develops, Prime Minister Modi's firm commitment to India's farmers and the broader agricultural community remains a central aspect of the nation's response to the escalating trade tensions with the United States.
