India’s Modi Vows To Protect Farmers Amid U.S. Tariff Escalation

In a resolute response to the United States' recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged unwavering support for the nation's farmers, dairy producers, and fishermen. Addressing the nation, Modi emphasized that India would not compromise on the interests of its agricultural and fishing communities, even if it meant bearing personal or political costs.

The U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, justified the tariff increase by citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil, which the U.S. views as a national security concern. This move has led to a breakdown in trade negotiations between the two countries, with no further talks scheduled until the tariff dispute is resolved.

Domestically, the tariff escalation has raised significant concerns. Indian exporters have reported order cancellations and suspensions from U.S. buyers, particularly in the electronics sector, which faces potential losses of $20–30 billion due to the new tariffs. In response, the Indian government is implementing a three-pronged strategy: supporting affected exporters, diverting trade to alternative markets, and redirecting impacted exports to domestic consumption.

Internationally, the tariff dispute has strained U.S.-India relations, which were previously marked by mutual admiration between Modi and Trump. The U.S. has also appeared to forge closer ties with Pakistan, India's longstanding rival, offering mediation in the Kashmir conflict and announcing a major oil deal with Islamabad. These developments challenge Modi’s strong stance against Pakistan and threaten years of strategic partnership between the U.S. and India.

As the situation unfolds, Prime Minister Modi's commitment to safeguarding India's agricultural and fishing sectors remains steadfast. The government's proactive measures aim to mitigate the economic impact of the U.S. tariffs and ensure the resilience of domestic industries amid escalating trade tensions.
